| Getting a Handle on Business Casual Dress |
|
|
Business casual dress is one of the most confusing phrases for a career
woman. These three words simply do not go together. It’s very unusual
really to picture casual attire with the term business and most women
would usually think of cocktail dresses or evening gowns when they hear
the word dress. Sticking the term “casual” between the words business
and dress makes the whole thing very confusing for a lot of working
women.
Many women always struggle on casual Fridays. The process finding out exactly what a business casual dress is can be long and difficult. Well, that was my experience before I worked for a fashion company.
I learned a lot about business casual dress, even though my position was in payroll. I have also taken some time to jot down the information I have gathered through the years.
You should never look to the television for inspiration for your wardrobe. Keep in mind that television portrays a dream world. You need to be grounded in the real world if you want to be taken seriously as a career woman. We all love to watch Sex and the City but it would be unwise to adopt the fashion on the show into your business casual dress. Make sure that the pants and skirts you choose are comfortable. A business casual dress should never be tight and confining. Otherwise, you may experience sitting through a long meeting with a pair of pants that pull and bunch. You also need to consider appearance when it comes to business casual dress.
You will only look unprofessional if you wear loose or wrinkly clothing. Your dress should be comfortable but this doesn’t mean that you can wear pajamas to the office. You should communicate to others that you respect your self as well as your associates.
It is also important to give due attention to the length of your pants and skirts. Don’t wear pants with cuffs that tend to rise up a little too much. The same goes for a skirt that slides up. Do not wear a skirt that literally binds you and prevents you from breathing.
Your tops should always be cleaned and pressed. Your business casual dress shirts should always be professional and appropriate no matter how relaxed the atmosphere is.
